The American and Pan-Canadian Committees in Solidarity with Kabylia Protest Algerian President Bouteflika’s Visit to the USA
The American Committee in Solidarity with Kabylia, and
the Pan-Canadian Committee in Solidarity with Kabylia
will hold a sit-in in front of the
White House in Washington D.C. (1600 Pennsylvania Avenue)
on July 12th from 10 am to 5 pm.
This action is to protest the visit of Algerian president Bouteflika to the USA and urge President Bush to take a stand against the violent and bloody repression of the population of the Kabylia region.
This visit comes at a time when the Algerian paramilitary forces, including members of specially-trained elite commandos of the Army
disguised as gendarmes, are using live bullets on the Amazigh population in the Kabylia region. More than 100 people have been killed, and several thousands have been tortured and injured in the last two months alone. Savage punitive actions as well as provocations against the population of Kabylia are being carried out daily without spearing babies, children, women, and elderly.
Since April 18th, demonstrations against the Algerian corrupt regime have spread to several other regions of the country. People are marching daily for the recognition of the Amazigh (Berber) language and identity, democracy, freedom of speech, and against injustice.
The American and Pan-Canadian Committees in Solidarity with Kabylia will display banners denouncing the Algerian military-backed regime, pictures of injured and scenes of repression. The committees will have a dossier that includes a partial list of the victims available to the press, will circulate a petition and distribute flyers.
