Prison situation in Algeria under scrutiny

In the framework of bilateral cooperation between Algeria and Great Britain in terms of prison reform and penitentiaries levelling in Algeria, a British delegation form the International Centre for Prison Studies ICPS arrived yesterday in Algeria to allow it meeting the international standards adopted in the developed countries penitentiaries.
The exploratory visit is to last 12 days and falls within a support plan funded by the British Foreign Office. The visit is quite like the one already organized by the British Embassy in Algiers and the Algerian (General Department of Penitentiary Administration) -Direction Generale de l’Administration Pénitentiaire et de la Réinsertion-.
The 12-day visit will be an opportunity for the British delegation to get acquainted with the penitentiary system in Algeria and take stock of authorities’ achievements in this field.
In a comprehensive programme of workshops, presentations the Algerian party is given the opportunity to gain an understanding of the pioneer British experience when it comes to meeting the international standards.
Visits to a set of prisons are also to be organized to allow the British delegation to see the real imprisonment conditions in the country.
The visit falls within the framework of the extradition agreement concluded between the two parties, especially that Britain needs to see to which extent Algeria is ready to receive the extradited and whether prisons meet the humanitarian standards so as the physical and mental safety of the criminals is guaranteed.
