4 detainees probably arrived and families claim to stop promoting the torture idea
El Khabar, 8 august 2007
Well informed sources said that a delegation from the Red Cross and Crescent International Committee, division of Algeria, is to visit Guantanamo prison in Cuba golf. The same sources mentioned that the Algerian delegation is to check the conditions of the Algerian prisoners there that are detained by the American government under terrorism charges.
Observers told El Khabar that 4 detainees, actually, arrived Monday to Algiers through Houari Boumedien Airport at 3 pm, while the Algerian Authorities still have not either infirmed or confirmed the information. Furthermore, a human right organization spokesman reported from that probably 4 detainees arrived on Monday, and the rest are expected to arrive too.
Ahmed Belbacha’s brother Mohamed told El Khabar in a phone call that “the family still has not heard anything new”. Ahmed Belbacha by the way was acquitted by the American prison direction. The brother of the detainee Abdelkader Ait Idir claimed through El Khabar “to stop promoting the idea that says in case the detainees are to be tortured in Algeria” he further continued that “these rumours are used by the detainees attorneys who are convincing their clients to submit an appeal against deportation decisions, while there are guarantees to be well treated”. Justice Minister Mr. Tayeb Belaiz has already stated that there is no reason for Authorities to sue the presumed Guantanamo detainees in case they are not involved in local security cases.
