Guantanamo prisoners have the right to ask Washington for compensation

El Khabar, 29 April 2007

National consultative commission for the protection and promotion of human rights head Farouk Ksentini pointed out yesterday that Algerian authorities started negotiations with their US counterparts for the rendition of 7 Algerian detainees in Guantanamo detention camp as a first step. He further noted that asking for compensation is a right and a duty.
Mr. Farouk Ksentini made clear that the rendition of the 27 Algerian detainees will be done gradually.
On another side, he reaffirmed their right to the presumption of innocence and its concomitant measures, given the fact that reliable information are lacking, he prefers a US defence for a better follow-up of their cases, in addition to the factor of the language and the full knowledge of the US judiciary system which will be playing a crucial role.
Mr. Ksentini denied the existence of whatsoever agreement between the Algerian authorities and the US ones on the rendition follow-up, as the USA uses the term of “enemy combatants” in order to overshadow the maltreatment, essential human rights and Geneva Convention breaches.
The latest developments of Algerian detainees in Guantanamo a weak after the visit of the US Ambassador at-Large Clint Williamson to Algeria last Saturday, who told Foreign affairs minister Mr. Mohamed Bedjaoui about Washington will to render the Algerian detainees in Guantanamo.
