Jail’s General Direction transferring 64 detainees

The Justice Ministry’s General Direction of Penitentiaries has transferred 64 detainees from El Harrach prison to other jails far from Algiers, a judicial source said. A step considered as a sanctioning measure undertaken by El Harrach prison, following the reported abuses by the prison guards on some detainees jailed in connection with terrorism cases.
According the same source, the transfer operations of the 64 prisoners have been undertaken last Saturday. The events El Harrach prison has experienced last Tuesday night have been broken out after the prison direction has decided closing a preying room turning it to a bed room for other prisoners, a source briefed on the situation said. The prison guards have responded violently to the detainees’ protests. The prisoners have been sent to other prisons away Algiers, while a group has been transferred to Bouira penitentiary, another has been transported to Berouaguia prison in Medea province, and other groups have been transferred to the prisons of Guelma and Laghouat.
