Spain rejects unveiling hundred haragas bodies in Almeria

El Khabar, 5 may 2008

Hundred bodies belonging to Algerian youths drowned in Spanish shores are being kept in a special mortuary in Almeria, an official source within the Spanish Foreign Ministry told El Khabar. El Khabar has tried visiting the mortuary after being given the green light from the direction. Yet, a political decision issued by Madrid prohibited the visit, saying: “releasing pictures of these people will intimate that Spain would not be able dealing with this issue.” The same source further told El Khabar that in case relatives of the dead harragas had not given a sign within a period of a year, the mortuary direction would burry them in Christian cemeteries. However, rumors being circulated in Spain say many bodies have been burned, “mostly as burying in Spain is done after paying fees by relatives or insurance companies, while, usually, haragas’ relatives are unknown.” Furthermore, pictures of missed haragas are being stuck everywhere in Almeria, while several humanitarian associations there are requesting visiting the mortuary in order to make sure the missed haragas are not inside.
