Counterterrorism and economic partnership on the agenda

El Khabar, 6 september 2008

The US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice arrives today to Algeria in an unprecedented official visit, in the frame of a Maghreb tour. Rice has visited yesterday Libya, a visit called by observers as historic. The US Secretary of State is going to meet with President Abdelaziz Bouteflika in the midday, before holding discussions with her counterpart Mourad Medelci. The two of them are to hold a press briefing this afternoon. Sources said discussions between Condoleezza Rice and President Bouteflika are to focus on counterterrorism issue, noting that Condoleezza Rice is going to leave her position next November, as soon as the new President of the United States is elected. Algeria tends getting more political and security support from the US, yet, the relations between the two countries have not reached expectations, despite recurrent high level visits recently. The two parties are also expected discussing the issue of Algerians detained in Guantanamo Bay, in terms of releasing other prisoners later. However, Counterterrorism issue and economic partnership with the Maghreb Union countries are going to be on the heart of Condoleezza Rice’ agenda in her visit tour trip.
