The Family of an Algerian prisoner in Spain calls on Justice Minister to intervene
El Khabar, 22 september 2008
The parents of the Algerian prisoner suspected of being linked to Al-Qaeda, Khaled Labidi, has called on the Minister of Justice to intervene to release their son, because the Algerian justice declared him innocent in 2005.
In this context, the family of this prisoner, which includes 2 brothers, who have already been extradited to Algeria by the Spanish authorities, has indicated that their son “is a victim of false intelligence information; he has been already tried before the Algerian justice, which proved him innocent in 2005.”
The Algerian prisoner is detained at a Spanish prison for 10 days. He is charged by the Spanish justice for constituting a terrorist cell that has been dismantled by the Spanish security services in 2005.
Still, the prisoner’s family has denied the accusations reported by some press agencies saying that he has been handed over to the Spanish authorities for terror allegations. The main charge Labidi Khaled faces is the establishement of links with a terrorist group named “Ansar al-Islam,” specialized in recruiting people to fight in Iraq.
“You are aware that it is unfair to try the same person before the justices in two different countries; if it is the case, the international law will be infringed,” said the letter sent to the Minister of Justice.
