Political situation in Algeria blocked says Former Foreign Affairs Minister Ibrahimi

El Khabar, 31 may 2008

The current political situation is blocked in Algeria, even if the country’s financial situation raises no concerns, said the former Prime Minister, Mr. Ahmed Taleb Ibrahimi, indicating that there is no real political opposition in Algeria, while considering the coup staged by the former dead President Boumedien, against the regime of the by-then incumbent President Benbela, as a step benefiting to Algeria. Mr. Ibrahimi who has been the guest of a program broadcasted by the Arab-speaking channel Al-Jazeera, has indicated that he decided abandoning politics following the 2004 “shameful” Presidential elections. He further said that he was one of the main people preaching for the national reconciliation, since the beginning of the crisis in early 90’s, in view of avoiding the military confrontation, but the regime adopted the military confrontation. In this context, the former Foreign Affairs Minister speaking for the first time since the Presidential elections held in 1999, said he decided running for President, to make the national reconciliation in concrete form, emphasizing that the decision makers have put pressure on Algerian people, without letting Algerians electing their President, adding that he was targeted by a campaign soiling his reputation. Mr. Ibrahimi said the contest was not fair as the regime employed all the information means favoring one candidate than the others whose means were limited. He announced that he applied for creating a political party, but the Ministry of Home Affairs did not responded in favor of his request, while issuing an order banning him from politics.
