Human Rights activists, unionists and journalists:

“Freedom of speech guaranteed by the Constitution, soon confiscated by legislators!”

El Khabar, 4 may 2008

Human Rights activists, unionists and journalists have displayed the Authority’s vision towards the journalist who is considered as “a dangerous criminal,” who should not be given freedom; while agreeing that “if not journalists, the country would have been driven down the cliff!” The president of the Algerian Human Rights League, LADH, Mr. Mustapha Bouchachi has not only considered the journalist as an essential actor in terms of activating the life, but also mentioned that “freedom of speech” is more valuable than life itself. Mr. Mustapha Bouchachi mentioned that it is not easy for any press to do the performance of the Algerian press during a political deadlock era, as well as the exacerbation of torture and corruption in all State’s institutions. LADH president further concluded: “the freedom of speech guaranteed by the Constitution is soon confiscated by the legislator,” pointing out: “the legislation being set by Authorities is not respected by the Authorities themselves.” However, El Khabar deputy chief editor, Mr. Mahmoud Belhimer the Power tends dumping media with protagonist newspapers targeting disturbing serious newspapers, pointing out that such practice would not help media improving. A human Rights activist and journalist Hafnaoui Ghoul said ironically while talking: “I prefer staying in prison than being granted freedom; for in prison, at least, I neither hear about corruption, nor do I write about it!”
