France Telecom renounces penetrating Algerian telecoms market

El Khabar, 18 september 2008

Speaking to the British newspaper The Financial Times, the CEO of the French company, France Telecom, Mr. Didier Lombard has announced that the new strategy of the company will focus on new markets worldwide, while excluding the idea of investing in the Algerian telecoms market.

“This new strategy adopted by the company will target English speaking countries in Africa,” said France Telecoms CEO. He added that FT has not expressed its will of acquiring the Egyptian empire Orascom Telecoms, which means that FT is no more interested in the Algerian telecoms market. France Telecom was considering the privatization of the Algerian state-owned company Algérie Telecoms, as to pave its way to penetrate the Algerian market. But the difficulties facing the Algerian company have stopped the operation. Meanwhile, the recently appointed Prime Minister has excluded 220 companies from the privatization process, including Algérie Telecoms, for which several foreign investors have expressed interest in acquiring it, notably France Telecoms.
