Amnesty International yesterday published its annual report concerning death penalty, in which Algeria holds the third position worldwide with 271 pronouncements, knowing that the authorities didn’t apply it into practice since years.
Though not put in practice, the report shows that Algeria comes ahead of Iraq , in state of war, and the United States of America , where death penalty is widespread.
Algeria, which is only precede by China with 1,860 cases and Pakistan with 307, owes its position on the podium to the opening of several criminal files related to terrorism since most of the pronouncements were against elements of the so called “Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb” soon after the deadline set up buy the Algerian authorities within the national reconciliation process.
