President Bouteflika visits Iran to boost cooperation between both countries

El Khabar, 11 august 2008

The bilateral relationships between Algeria, and Iran, are strong, as a result of the normalization process initiated by both countries’ President in New York, in 2000, an Algerian diplomatic official said, adding that it is not easy to Algeria to forget the stance of Iran, during the 90’s. In this context, President Bouteflika has traveled yesterday to the Islamic Republic of Iran; for a 2-days visit, he reached the capital Tahran, from Beijing, where he has taken part in the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games, along with a great number of states’ Presidents. It is the second visit to Iran, by President Bouteflika, since he came to power; the first one he conducted in October.2003. He is accompanied by a panel of Ministers respectively, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Housing, Health, and the Minister of Higher Education, altogether with the Chairman of the Algerian-Iranian joint committee. Regarding the Ministers accompanying the President Bouteflika, the discussions between both delegations, will focus on the cooperation in the sectors of health, housing, and energy. The discussions between both countries’ Ministers of Energy are expected to deepen as the idea of creating a cartel of the gas exporting countries, like the OPEC, will be approached. The energetic cooperation and especially in the petrochemicals industry, is one of the main issues to be addressed between both Ministers, because Iran is one of the leading countries in this field.
