Algerian homeland security director passed away

The director of Algerian homeland security General Smain Lamari died from a heart attack at the age of 66 while on Algiers’ military hospital on Monday, said medical sources.

Lamari’s body was buried at Laalia cemetry in Algiers on Tuesday.

Born on 1st June 1941 at El Harrach (Algiers), Smain Lamari joined the National Liberation Army (ALN) on September 5th 1958.

After Algeria’s independence, he worked in different structures of the People’s National Army (ANP) as an officer then he held several military positions before being promoted to the rank of Major General on 5 July 1999.

In 2000, General Smain Lamari participated in talks with Algerian armed Islamists as part of the Civil concord law and the National Reconciliation set by Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika.
