Algeria: “Green Zone” in affluent areas following Algiers attacks
Ech-Chorouk, on Tuesday, June 20, 2007
Affluent areas in Hydra (Algiers) where the headquarters of embassies, consulates and foreign diplomats’ residences are located have been turned into “Green Zone” in view of the big number of blocked roads since the Algiers attacks on April 11th.
There are about 20 to 30 blocked roads in Hydra and many embassies and consulates ask for blocking some public roads as they constitute a danger and threaten their safety, Hydra’s mayor told Echorouk.
The mayor said 90 percent of embassies and diplomatic residences were based in Hydra in addition to around 60 foreign and national big companies.
On the other hand, people are bothered by the “maze” there. In this regard, a shopkeeper in Hydra said he lost all his customers because of those blocked roads. Thus he plans to buy another shop in another area other wise he will be bankrupt.
“No one can come to my shop because all the roads are blocked”, he says.
As a result of this situation, traffic has become more and more terrible.
The committee in charge of determining the block roads is composed of the following members : the mayor, Chief of Staff of the National Gendarmerie, district security chief, a representative of transport department, chief of civil protection unit, a representative of public works subsection, chief of urban transport unit and deputy prefect of Bir Mourad Rais District.
