Constitution revision to take place in 2007
El Khabar, 4 January 2007
Secretary General of National Liberation Front (FLN) Abdelaziz Belkhadem has confirmed referendum for constitution’s revision to be staged in 2007. “What we have promised will be fulfilled… we said constitution would be revised, and President of the Republic has confirmed it”.
Speaking yesterday in the FLN’s headquarters, Belkhadem, said the party would start preparing for next elections, including referendum on constitution’s revision, parliamentary and municipal elections. Constitution revision will take place this year, said Belkhadem admitting “it had been delayed, but we never said it was cancelled”. President Bouteflika had previously called citizens to be ready for the referendum that was to be held before the end of 2006. Yet, the issue had been less and less brought up over the past few months by President of the Republic and his confidence man, Abdelaziz Belkhadem (the Prime Minister).
As concern FLN’s own proposals for constitution’s revision, Abdelaziz Belkhadem said “I don’t know if the President has adopted our proposals partly or as a whole… yet, I can say we have reached some maturity, and may held a referendum now”, without elaborating. Prime Minister Belkhadem had formerly said “three drafts constitution are now at the President’s office, and he will choose one of them”.
