Iran, Algeria highlight Islamic unity

Iran has called on the Islamic world to strengthen unity and to seek a political and int’l approach in promoting global understanding.
“Islamic countries enjoy great potential,” said Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki at a meeting in Tehran with Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika. “They should adopt approaches that lead to understanding in the international community.”
President Bouteflika along with five Algerian government ministers arrived in Tehran on Sunday evening for a three-day visit to discuss forming an international gas exporters’ club modeled on the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).
Both Algeria and Iran are oil and gas exporters.
Mottaki called for boosting cooperation and consultation between Iran and Algeria on various regional and international developments.
The Algerian president welcomed his country’s enhanced ties with Iran in the fields of economy, industry and oil and gas.
He also stressed reinforcing solidarity between Islamic states.
Bouteflika said the charges against Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir were illegitimate and illegal.
The International Criminal Court’s (ICC) Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo recently charged President al-Bashir with masterminding in Darfur a campaign of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.
The ICC prosecutor has asked for an arrest warrant for al-Bashir.
The Islamic Republic has objected to the charges brought against the Sudanese president arguing they are politically-motivated.
